White goods include major domestic appliances used such as gas and electric ovens, freezers, refrigerators, stoves,vacuum cleaners and microwave ovens. The sales volume grew tremendously year on year for the 1st time in three years in the April-June quarter, showing a positive shift in consumer sentiment and igniting hopes of a good year for home appliance makers.

According to some reports, ”Air-conditioners led the improvement with volume sales in the 1st quarter up 21% compared to the year-ago period.” Sales volume of washing machines and refrigerators rose 15% during the quarter.

Developing countries such as India and China have largely been secured from the backfire of the recession as consumers continued to buy basic appliances.

Buoyed by the uptick, companies now are planning a slew of launches in the coming festive season to woo consumers. White goods sales is often considered as one of the barometers of the economy.

Marketers such as Panasonic, Godrej Appliances, Voltas, and Videocon expect double digit growth rate in the upcoming months as the economy is anticipated to speed up. Patchy monsoon is expected to push the sales of air-conditioner in the July-September quarter too.
